Great Saving In "Dead Mileage"

The first radio-controlled Taxi Service in Britain has saved between 30 and 40 per cent in petrol consumption, tire wear and general running costs since it was started some six months ago. In addition, the efficiency and speed of service-operation has been enormously increased. “Dead Mile- age" the return of taxis to a base for orders--is the bug-bear of any hire-service fleet.

This has been practically cut mul j dince MS. I, Rose, af the "CAMTAX" feet in Cambridge |equipped his sixteen taxis with Pye two-way radio and installed a trans mitter in his head office.

The total cost was £2,000, bat un the results to date Mr. Rose calculates that the installation will have paid for itself in a year. Operating figures are interesting.

Allowing only 10 per cent for "dead, Inileage (it is actually very much higher) and allowing that each cab covers 20 average of 50 miles a day to very low estimate), the saving over a year of 100 days works out at 240,000 miles in petrol, zuh her and maintenance costs and 16. 000 man-hours in labour,

Having delivered his "fare," the driver takes the hand microphone from his dashboard and calls Head- quarters (see photo above). There, the controller glances through his orders phoned-in by customers. In large number of cases be can call the driver back and give him, orders to proceed direct to such-and-such place and pick up his next fare. This cuts down the dead mileage of

useless return to Irase.

in slack times, the controller can tell the driver to wait in case fresh orders come in from that district.

SYNTHETIC RUBBER TIRES

|tween parked cars; or another vehicle on the wrong side of the road when rounding a blind| curvo.

The brakes, of course, are not applied immediately the driver receives the signal to stop. There is period-gon- erally called "reaction time" which is the interval required to act after a dřívor has re- ceived a warning to step on tho, brakes.

This reaction time varies with driver to driver, bat it is catimate; to be about three- quarters of a second. This means that at 20 MPH the car will have travelled 22 feet be fore the brake pedal is touch- ed. At higher spoeda, of couras, it will travel even greater distances.

Sot out in the form of a table, with the distance cover- ed during the driver's reaction time added to the actual brak- distance; this works out on normal dry roads, as follows:- 20 MPH: 22 plus 21— 48 feet, 30 MPH: 88 plus, 47- 80 feet, 40 MPH: 44.plus 84-128 foot.
