Moving A Floating Dock
Built in Bombay for the Admiralty, a giant floating dock was towed in two sections through the Suez Canal recently on its voyage from India to Malta. The average speed through the Canal was in the region of 5 knots. Floating docks now play a vital part in naval strategy, and in the Mediterranean, the Atlantic and the Pacific they provide repair facilities for vessels which other- wise would be compelled to make long voyages to graving docks in their home ports. Subject to a certain amount of poetic licence, this sketch gives a graphic idea of the size of the dock and the diff- culties of the long tow.
