Lord Pakenham, the Minister responsible for the British Zone of Germany, launched, in the House of Lords a sharp attack on the Com- munist-dominated Governments of Southeast Europe, for their "Intimidation" of and "sys- tematic drive to weaken" the peasant parties which were, he said, supported by a solid ma- jority of the population in Rumania, Bulgaria and Hungary.

Replying to the debate initiated by Lord Vansit- tart, former chief diplomatic "adviser to the Government, on the Hungarian elections fixed. för August 31, Lord Pakenham said that he. could not go so far as Lord Vansittart and say in advance that these elections would be. unfair, but the British Government intended to watch the position carefully, and to act on the opinions it formed.
