Liberal Paper To Close Down
(By Fred Hampson)
Shanghai, July 11.
A liberal newspaper, critical but fair, which pre- sents both sides of controversial matters is apt to be more popular with the Chinese peo- ple than with the Chinese Government. So thinks Nien Pao Li, publisher of the Shanghai "Wen Hui Pao," who is now supervising the "liquidation" of his newspaper. The "Wen Hui Pao" was closed by the Shanghai Woosung Garrison during the June student demonstrations. It was one of three indepen- dent dailies to be suppressed. None has been permitted to reopen. Publisher Nien would like to resume publication as an independent, but not as a party or governmental, paper.
