BUSINESS PULSE HAS

AN IRREGULAR BEAT

New York, Apr. 21.... The pulse of United States business and finance. developed an irregular beat last week as agila- tion for lower prices collided headlong with an overwhelming quest for higher wages.. Retail trade was lower, steel output dropped for the third straight 'week, engineering construc- tion awards tapered along with meat produc- tion, and, electric power output declined for: the sixth consecutive period. The return of the soft coal miners to work brought bitu minous production near normal weekly output of around 12,- 000,000 tons and this in turn was rellected in an increase of 43,000 in freight carloadings.

Automobile output climbed fram better than 5,000 unitn the previous week as the indur- 1,000,000th try rolled out Its passeng ear since the first of the year.

Crude oil continued Its sea- sonal gain and bank clearing were higher.

Wall Street Losses The stock market ran smack into the worst selling storm of the year which clipped nearly US$2,000,000,000 from the quoted value of listed shares before ubating. Prices rose, fell and then declined again leaving a net loss for the week of US$2,000,000,000 or more Stock wales went to 6.966,480 sharen compared with the pre- vious week's 4,663,910 and last year's 6,429,940)

The par value of bond sales was US$23,933,000 compared to last week's US$18,891,000, and Inst year's US$19,633,100.

The Texas City disaster with its unaccounted millions of dol Jara in material losser Win pointed up vividly in the annual report of the National Board of Fire Underwriters, disclos. ing fire losses soared to a now high of US$72,000,000 (In Mar US$13,000 was recorded).

High Prices

High prices and what to do about them, plus new steam in union drives for higher wagea kept the business world on edge throughout the week,
