Yesterday's cut in the London official price of sil- ver (as previously) was not ordered by the Bank of England. Instead, the Bank of Eng-. land had intimated that henceforth it would not set the price but would allow brokers to buy silver (for essential British industries and for re-export against dollars) from the cheap- est overseas source, including dollar sources. Thus there is now a definite "two-price" London niarket for dollar silver and sterling silver, -The latter for export to Bombay was quoted yesterday at 64.5 pence as compared with the official market rate of only 44d. This great dis- parity is slightly wider than the discount on British securities in New York which implies that free sterling in New York is about $2.80 against the official rate of 4.03, or a discount of 30 per cent.
