HEITO CAMP TRIAL: DEFENCE STORIES

Sgt. Fujiie Horoji, the third accused, testified at yesterday's War Crimes Trial of himself, Lieut. Tamaki Koji and Sgt. Chiba Arashi that when he arrived at Heito Camp after being conscripted into the Army, he made represen- tations for the Hospital, which was in a very bad condition, to be improved and enlarged. Replying to defence counsel, Chiba said that he had never heard POWS complain about the in- sufficiency of food. He denied that he had de- prived POWs of and given to the Japanese, food which had been purchased for POWs. He knew what went on in Camp, but did not know that POWs were required to do "push ups."
