New York, Dec. 2.

The soft coal strike had a definitely depressing effect on business last week. Production was practically curtailed in steel mills. Automo- bile plants operated only three days in order to conserve coal. Train schedules were thinned sharply. Virtually every other segment of industry was affected in some degree.

The ranks of the nation's idle swelled consider- ably beyond the 400,000 miners directly in- volved in the coal impasse and indications were that the number would grow to huge propor- tions within a matter of days.
