UNITED NATIONS WEEK
Colony's Portuguese Community
The cosmopolitan community of Hong Kong con- tains distinct sections not the least important of these being the Portuguese, They figure prominently in the story of the growth of the Colony, and have been closely linked with Its activities, social, commercial, recreational, and even defensive. Most of all, perhaps, they have' contributed to the internationalism of Hong Kong probably more than any other group of people similarly placed. Descendents of the Portuguese at Macao, they have had to adapt themselves. to the life of Hong Kong. In the early days of the Colony's history they served the Administration as well: as British and other merchants, as inter- mediaries with the Chinese none of whom · spoke English.
