Russia

"I have not today treated these issues as controversial and as matters for a quarrel be- tween the Government and the Opposition. The Government have the power and responsibi lity and they also have the knowledge. I am, however, forced-to examine the question whether the situation has de teriorated in the year that has passed."--Reuter.

In general, he voiced complete Hitler Youth

policy.

It seemed, then, that he had finished; he deliberately en- couraged the impression. With studied underemphasis then, Mr. Churchill referred to a re- mark made by Mr. Attlee, who had said that the presence, of large armed forces in Europe might constitute a danger to peace.

Berlin, Oct. 23. The United States authorities in Germany today took measures to tighten their control of Ger- man youth organisations and movementa of young people in the United States zone after yes. terday's dissolution of n. 3,000 strong youth movement in Wuert- temberg.

The Swabian movement was dissolved after investigations had shown that it had repeatedly dis- regarded Military Government orders forbidding political acti vities.

Mr. Churchill said he wanted to ask the Government a ques- tion. Instead of asking it, he told the House that in travel-

London, Oct. 24. Mr. Churchill, referring to the question of the strength of the armed forces, recalled that in October last year, he had pressed for more rapid demo- bilisation and that he had given minimum figures to which in his judgment a reduction in numbers should be made. These were: Royal Navy 150,000; Army 1,000,000; Royal Air Force 400,000—a total of 1,550,- 000 men.
