Calcutta, Aug. 19.

Calcutta, the largest city in India, was tonight tense but quieter after the third day of the Hindu-Moslem communal clashes which last night turned the central area into a battlefield. Steel helmeted British and Indian troops, were to- night on picket duty in the riot arcas. Others spent several hours today clearing up the wreckage after an orgy of rioting, arson and looting. Estimates today of the casualties in the rioting on Friday and Saturday vary. The Calcutta Nationalist newspaper "Eastern Ex- press" speaks of 600 dead and 2,500 injured, while "The Statesman" gave figures of about 270 killed and 1,600 injured.
