KOWLOON DOCKYARD PETITION
A deputation of over! 500 workers of the Kow- loon Dockyard crossed the harbour yesterday morning and marched in a body, to the residence of Major Chauvin of the Labour Office in order to
present a petition to H.E.
the Governor.
Major Chauvin received the men and later they were taken to sco Mr. R. R. Todd, the
Labour Officer, who promised to get in touch with the Dockyard management and to convey their demands. These were that the shutout order should be re- scinded, negotiations resumed. and no dismissals be made while negotiations were in progress.
Late in the afternoon Mr. Todd informed the men that the Dockyard management had re- f fused to make any change. its decision to proceed with the] contract system. If the men re- ported for work this morning. however, they would be admit ted and 400 out of the 600-add dismissed workers would be, re- engaged through the contrac- tors.
In the evenlig, at a mass meet- ing of over 600 of the workers in Kowloon, the offer of the Dock- yard management was turned
down and it was decided not to return to work today. The shut- out order was strongly rosented, and the men took the attitude that "they were forced to go on strike by the unreasonable attitude of the employers."
Parade Tomorrow
It was also decided that another "monster depulation of workers" from both the Kowloon Dock and Talkoo Dock would assemble at Vehicular Ferry Pier at 10 a.m. on Tuesday to, present another petition to H.E. the Governor.
An appeal was also made to the foremen of the Dockyard not to return to work today
