Russia Hard At Work On Atom

(By Eddy Gilmore)'

New York, June 6. Russia is devoting a large portion of her national energy to atomic research-toward peacetime possibilities, she says, not toward a bomb, However, with other nations in possession of the bomb's secrets and not showing an inclination to share them, it would be extremely unrea- listic to say the least, to assume Russia is clos- ing her eyes to that side of the laboratory. It is of course impossible for a newsman stationed in Russia with the limited amount of in- formation he has on hand on this highly secret subject to say anything with finality about the Sovieta and the bomb.

There is reason to believe-I emphasise the word believe- that Russia must be well behind the United States. There are thoso in responsible diplomatic military positiona who hold the same opinion.
