¡Canton Rice ¡Prices Drop

Canton, June 4.

A sharp drop in rice prices has put Kwangtung Province. centre of a food crisis a short Itime ago, past the danger point und at the same time, cut the | cost of living by almost 20

per cent,

The new reduction brought the price close to the level of two months ago when the best grade rice was sold at CN $45,- 000 a picul.

Further price declines are ex- pected and to insure a continu- ous supply, Governor Lo Cheuk- ying will fly to Nanking to at- tend a joint conference of the Ministry of Food and the Minis try of Finances" on tax reform.

The governor said he had col- lected statistica on the food sitantion in Kwangtung with a view to securing a constant sup- ply during the shortage senson. Additional shipments of rice from Kinngsi and Fukien are expected here by June 15,

Apparently influenced by the increased rico supplies. the prices of firewood, Bugar and flour also have gane down. Furthermore, there have been

imports of canned meat from Australia which is much cheaper than pork, beef and fish here.

American cigaretten which have found their way here, have poised a problem for native manufacturers who have appeal- ed to the government for pro- tection against foreign com- petition.—Associated Press.
