POLITICAL PARADOX

It is a curious paradox of political life that while Liberalism has grown stronger and stronger during the last twenty years, the Liberal Party). has grown weaker and weaker. Its creed has be- come the creed of British

democracy. A political faith which all the best minds of all parties either accepted or at least did not repudiate, afforded no basis for party strife, no rallying ground for party leaders, and ceased to gather big battalions for the conflict at Westmin- ster.

The Labour Party had a more controversial case to put before the electors and won the suffrages of many who still believed in all that Liberals "nad stood for. Conservatism had broadened its plat- form and no longer ques- tioned the fundamentals for which Liberals once had fought, and won the ..votes of many Liberal- minded men who distrust- ed the class-objectives of Socialists. A course in which all believe is one for which no one need fight unless it is again called in question.
