Scene Of "Indescribable Devastation" Greets Nazis

Scorched Earth

IT WAS ANNOUNCED in Berlin, last night that when the German troops entered Kiev they found “indescribable devastation.” This is a complete contradiction of earlier statements from Axis sources which said the city had been captured virtually intact and that the Russians' "scorched earth” tactics had not been applied there.

Last night's announcement, issued by the official German news agency, said: "All vital supplies had been removed or blown up and the water and electricity works destroy- ed and put out of action."

It continued: "The place is 1000000000000000000 strewn with the wreckage of rail- ways and bridges that had been blown up.

"The population had not the bare necessities of life. By their destructive sabotage the Bolshe- viks have endangered the lives of tens of thousands in the most cruel fashion."

Meanwhile a description of the capture of the city given by the correspondent of "La Suisse" (quoted by the Vichy news agency) tells how naked Germans stormed casemates at Kiev.

The correspondent, who states he received his information from "authoritative German sources," says the German troops had been outside the city for some weeks.
