opened, the. Queen clubs. and South had a trouble suppressing a groan as he looked at the dummy. The King of spades was a useful card, but the King of diamonds was abso lutely worthless
unless West could be induced to duck the first diamond trick. (If-West! took the first diamond South. could later get a discard on the diamond King. but would still lose a diamond and three hearts),
South knew just what would): 'happen if he won the first trick and immediately led a diamond: West would hop right up with the Ace of diamonds, suspecting. the fact that South had only a singleton. But if West were con- vinced that South had more than one diamorid; he might play lbw on the first round of that suit:
So after winning the Arst trick, South carefully drew three rounds of trumps obviously removing the only card of entry to the dummy. Then South led his diamond. West looked at the entryless dummy and never dreamed, that South had removed the only entry to the King of diamonds. It seemed a sure thing that South had more than one diamond. so West saw no reason to put up his Ace on the first round of the suit.
Of course that was just what South wanted. He won the trick with dummy's King of alamonds

The most significant feature of the same week has been the Royal Air Force's continuous night and day activity. Saturday night when specially unfavourable wea- ther did not
prevent raids Cherbourg and the Dutch coast- was the only night on which no British bombers were over Ger- many itself.

On three of the remaining six nights Mannheim was heavily at- tacked. There was a particularly heavy raid on Cologne on August 26, while Dusseldorf and Duisberg were the main objectives on the other two nights. Subsidiary night attacks were also carried out against the
ports of Boulogne, Havre and Ostend.

NAVY TAKES OVER
NEW YORK AIRPORT
As New York quickened the tempo of its participation in the national defence programme, the United States Navy the other day installed itself in Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn,
Hangars formerly occupied by private flying schools and other civilian agencies were being re- painted with Navy gray, and on out the British air force making some the lettering "U. S. Navy" daylight sweeps, one of which | had already appeared.
Not a single day passed with
was a remarkable Ibw-level at. tack on Rotterdam, and numer- ous daylight attacks were also made against shipping.
The heavy offensive nature of these activities is shown by figures of losses-the Germans lost 21 and the British 73, of which 43 were
bombers and 27 fighters, and three not specified-Reuter.
