General Koniev Keeps Up Attack

THE SUCCESSFUL RUSSIAN · COUNTER-ATTACK IN THE CEN- TRAL SECTOR BY GENERAL KONIEV IS STILL CONTINUING, AC- CORDING TO INFORMATION GIVEN ON MOSCOW RADIO LAST EVENING.

During the fierce fighting of the last few days one German division has been anni- hilated, its artillery captured and headquar- ters destroyed, the announcer stated, adding that 3,000 German officers and men were killed and 130 tanks and 100 automobiles destroyed.

German reinforcements have been rushed forward but have failed to recapture the lost ground. On Tuesday alone one of General Koniev's units held its ground against four of these attacks.

General Konjev's forces, it stated, have captured many Ger- man documents disclosing that the German forces are in a diffi- cult position in this sector, while prisoners have admit'ed shortages of ammunition and losses in men and material.

Odessa Defence Regarding events at Odessa, the announcer revealed that a Rucolan armoured train has broken through the German- Rumanian positions and

penetrated far behind the in. vaders' lines.

Admitting that Berce Bghting is going on around Odessa, the an- nouncer stated that not only are the Russian units there heroically defending their positions but that; the entire population has rallied to the defence of their city.

The statement declared that Stalin's "scorched carth" policy is

"Thus a general retreat is not possible," the statement concludes. "That is why the Soviet troops have been ordered to allow them- selves to be killed where stand." Reuter.
