GEISHAS AMONG JAPANESE EVACUEES FROM HONG KONG

ABOUT THIRTY Japanese, residents some with tears streaming down their cheeks and others covering their feelings behind- smiles and laughter – boarded the Japanese vessel, "Shiragane Maru” which sailed for ́Canton at 8 a.m. to-day.

The majority comprised the entire staff of the geisha girls of the Chitose Hotel, Ken- nedy Road, some 15 in number -- who have been evacuated to the Canton branch of the Hotel.

In

their traditional national Costumes, the geishas presented a colourful scene on the poop deck of the ship, where they remained waving silk handkerchiefs to friends and former patrons on the whart until the ship was out of sight.

Among the passenger were few men and families of Japanese shop-keepers in Wanchal, while the third class compartment was
