CHUNGKING

GETS RESPITE

After six days and nights of intensive aerial bombing of Chungking the Japanese aerial offen- sive appeared to be easing off somewhat yesterday.

No raid occurred during the night though two waves of 80

raided Japanese aircraft

the western suburbs and also the south bank of the Yangtse at

noon.

Meanwhile China yesterday ob- served "Chinese Air Force Day." A new campaign has been launch- ed to raise funds among Chinese both in China and oversea for the purchase of aircraft for the Chin- ese air force.

The day was designated as "Air Force Day" in commemora- tion of the first Japanese for- mation of heavy bombers prac. tically wiped out by Chinese fighters.

During the past four years the Chinese claim that 2,054 Japan- ese 'planes have been shot down or destroyed on the ground while 2,650 Japanese airmen have been either killed or taken prisoner.

The Chinese air force was or- ganised only few years before the outbreak of the Sino-Japan- ese hostilities in 1937.--Reuter.
