FRANCE BETRAYS

The news that whether openly or otherwise the Germans are likely to be given "transport" facili- ties" in French North and West Africa is a matter of greatest gravity.

The situation is per- fectly clear. Constant, discreetly exercised pres- sure on Admiral Darlan has made him exercise similar constant and dis- creet pressure on Mar-

shal Petain.

The result is a further breach of the armistice terms between Germany and France.

In this situation plain action must be used. In the Europe created by thei rise of the German Em- pire Britain has been France's faithful friend. The British people have felt the sincerest sorrow for the tribulations Lo which the French people' have been subjected.

But this is a war be- tween civilisation and the enemies of civilisation, and there can be no hesitating or temporising.
