WINDSOR HOUSE
ANTHEM OF VICTORY
Throughout the nations under
the heel of Hitler the letter "V"
has become a symbol of the even- tual victory of freedom. Chalked up on walls, it is a constant re- minder to the Nazi garrisons of the submerged fres glowing un-
der their boot heels, the fires that shall eventually destroy them and
the manifold miseries for which they stand. On a recent evening the BBC., in every tongue spoken In Furupe, suggested a number of variations on the "y" theme, cal-
culated to drive home to the Ger-
mans the explosive quality of the hatred they have distilled on an unhappy continent. The broadcast pointed out that the Morse code
signal for "V" was three dots and dash and told Europe's oppress- ed to use that rhythm when they
knocked upon a door, when they
wished 10 summon 3 waiter,
whenever they sought to express their contempt and deflance for
their temporary masters.
Reports received in London in-
dicale that the "sound war" s being taken up enthusiastically by the peoples of the occupied lands, that villagers beat out the rhythm of the "V" upon the side- walks as German troops march through their streets, and audi- ences in motion-picture houses applaud to the same beat when the ordained reels of Nazi con- quest are flashed upon the screen. It is not hard to appreciate the effect of this tapped-out jeer upon the invaders, to picture the ner- vous alertness of a Gestapo official who hears the ominous beat in every swinging shutter, creaking dour and in every drumming
rainfall.
