Mr. Amery thought that ought to prove most helpful in guidine and stimulating India's war effort. "I cannot help hoping, that in the course of working together side by side, In the common interest India's safety and India's future, representatives in these bodies of men of every political com- plexion and community will be drawn closer. I hope they will find bonds of mutual understanding and sympathy that may immense- ly facilitate the solution of those very difficult inter-cominunal and inter-Party problems which are to-day the main obstacle to India's attainment of her rightful posi- tion as a free and equal member in the British Commonwealth."

Twenty-Two Named

Twenty-two representatives from British India on the Defence Council have been named. Repre- sentatives of the Indian States will all be Princes with the possible exception of Hyderabad and the Viceroy has invited them to sit in rotation of nine at each meeting.

British India representatives in- clude one woman: the Begum Shah Nawaz, who was a member of the Round Table Conference and of the Joint Select Committee.-Reu- ter.
