This giant dum has been con-

structed across the Vaal River at rost, together with other sub- sidiary works, of £4,000,000 which the Rand Water Board con- tributed £500,000. The dam wall

1,900 feet long and 169 feet high, and when filled to capacity after seasonal rains the resulting lake will be 90 miles long and 13 miles across at its widest point near the wall.

There with the weather thickening a bit and with darkness falling fast the pilot took over and brought us into New Haven where I caught a train for Boston I would have been unable to catch in time in New York.

pilot could make "spot" and pre- cision landings rnd begin to get the hang of judgment in distance, weather phenomena, air speed and other factors that make “just” a pilut a "good pilot."

With Professor Oito C. Koppen of Massachusetts Institute of Technology. designer of the 'plane. Mr. Sutherland had A ploneer model built incorporating conclusions as to what a safe aero- plane should have. Beginning backwards, as it were. It worked startlingly well, too.

From this point they began to try and throw but many ideas, carefully scouted whatever "safety" 'plane designs there were, for the "faults" they might have and tried to avoid them in their own design. When the right time came-two years ago-they got financial backing and used this money to perfect their design and work it up into a ship having eye appeal as well as good flying characteristics.

When they got through they had a 'plane which, in the lan- guage of the CAA, la "charac- of spin- teristically Incapable ning." It could take off and land in & cross wind and handled well on the ground because of its tricycle landing gear. In take-off the flaps give the added "lift" which ald the rise from the ground and in landing provide the "drag" which slows the landing speed and permits a rapid descent.

Present Price $2,500

;

In the air the 'plane is turned by its ailerons through the same control which steers the nose wheel of the tricycle gear on the ground. It is a high wing mono- plane for better flap action, seats two in side by side arrangement and has suitable Interior fittings" and baggage space. The "Sky- farer," translated to automobile terms, will give you more than 20 miles to a gallon of gas, 500) miles to a quart of oll, has a range of 360 miles ond a cruising speed of 95 miles an hour. Slow- er, possibly than other ships of the same type, but sacrificed for the safety features. At present the ship retails for $2,500, but there is a very interesting story behind this,

If it weren't for the war and the metal priorities, Mr. Sutherland told me, this plane could be work ed down on a production basis to about $1,000, At present there are only about 80 workmen at the |Lowell plant.;
