HITLER'S "CRUSADE"

The political aspects of Ger- many's campaign against Russia merit close attention. Less than a week after launching its aggres- sion, Berlin requested other Euro- pean states to dispatch "token forces" to the battlefield.

Swiftly the recruiting of "volun- teers" is under way (France, Spain, Portugal, Holland, Bel- glum, Norway); new declarations of war against the Soviet were made (Hungary, Finland, Slovakia, as well as Rumania); and in other cases rupture of diplomatic rela- tions with Moscow or ald for Germany were announced (Den- mmk, Sweden and the new “Cron- tra").

Obviously the Reich does not expect actual military assistance from these conquered or indepen- dent countries. The Nazis have suffered no crippling losses iti eur- lier campaigns and do not require man power. Such units as other territories or nations send can be absorbed only with great diffleul- ty into The precise German machine. AL very best these "oken forces" can do no more than serve as police in some oc- cupied areas, thereby releasing Some Nazi reserves, And it is unlikely that Berlin would trust them even as pofie in any but a few chosen unterlands.

But if it is plain that Germany has no need of such "allies" 111 the field of combat, it is equally plam that she desires ostenta tiously to rally them to her new "erenade" to "save Europe.“ The
