Birmingham: The influx of workers into the industrial Mid- lands has made the shortage acute. Many tobacconists display notices saying, "Sorry, no cigarettes. This is correct." At other shops re- gular customers are getting only a quarter of their usual purchases. Liverpool: Early morning queues for cigarettes. Many shops closed for days at a time.
Manchester: Few tobacconists selling openly lest
queues form outside their doors. Some shops selling to regular customers only. Nottingham: Cigarette manu- facturers state that the shortage is chiefly due to increased con- sumption and to the movement of population.
Sheffield: Only regular custom-
