“WE TURKS WILL NEVER GO TO VIENNA," IS THE STATEMENT HEARD ON ALL HANDS IN ANKARA FOLLOWING THE SIGNATURE OF THE GERMAN-T U R KISH PACT, AND TURKS ARE ANXIOUS. THAT IT SHOULD BE MADE CLEAR THAT TURKEY, REMAINS A FRIEND ALSO OF BRITAIN.

In view of the present geographical and military situation, with German troops near her frontier, the new agreement has obvious advantages for Turkey.

Turkey's attitude to- wards Britain and Ger- many following upon the new 10-year Pact of signed in Friendship Ankara between Germany and Turkey is explained in a leading article in the semi-official Ankara newspaper "Ufus," quoted by the Turkish radio.

The editor of the newspaper writes: "We are not renewing our friendship with Germany nor are we trying to repair the old friend- dis-

cord between us and Germany.

"Wo will remain neutral in the complications centring around Turkey.

Turkish policy is to remain non-belliger ship. There exists no direct ent and she has no aggressive intentions against anybody. On the other hand she had been nervous lest Germany might try to drive east across Turkey.

The new Pact removes this possibility in the im- mediate future and there- fore, as it blocks one of the approaches to the Middle East, is held to be of value to Britain.

Considerable curiosity exists why Germany was so anxious to sign a Pact under any conditions. and some observers suggest she wants to assure that Turkey re- mains neutral in the event of a German attack on Russia

In Berlin the conclu- sion of the German- Turkish Treaty is regard- ed as meaning Turkey's inclusion in the political system of the Axis, says the Berlin correspondent of the "Stockholm Tid- ningen."

In regard to the declaration in the.
