NEAR EAST OIL CRISIS SCARES N.E.I. PRODUCERS

(By Relman Morin)

OIL FROM THE Netherlands Indies is assum- ing a new strategic importance to-day, as a result of threats to British pipe-lines in the Near East.

The recent fighting in Iraq, another oil centre, brought an immediate reaction here. Experts studied the possibility that Britain might be forced to draw more heavily on Far Eastern petroleum sources if fields in the Near East were destroyed or production suspended.

At the same time, there was the question, as always, of Japan. The Iraq disturbances began only a few days before Japan re- newed

her of contracts here. Last November, a Japanese trade mission concluded a deal, with six-months' options for the pur- chase of oll and petroleum pro- ducts. It was signed with pri- vate American and British com- panies, which pump, refine, and inarket the oil.

of war machines. It goes to Singapore, the mighty British naval base, just across the straits, to Hong Kong, a smaller but not unim- portant outpost, to China, Aus- tralia, South Africa and British India. It is a vital element in the Indies' own defence system,

Mr. Small and his wife hurried ! back and rescued the old ladies.

Later, alone, he led several of the wounded to a doctor and carried to safety a two-year-old baby, wrapped in an elderdown. "Not Pulling Weight"
