Ashville May Halt "NEEDLE" MATCHES FEATURE H.B.'s Successes TO-DAY'S BOWLS PROGRAMME

By "Grandstand"

THE DRAWING CARD on the week-ond's double-header at Caroline Hill will be the Hong Kong Brewers U.S.S. Ashville scrap slated for 10.00 a.m. on Sunday, whilst South China tangle with Chuck Waggoner's Hong Kong Baseballers at 2.30 p.m.

Brewers have been enjoying a successful streak of three straight wins this season, and it seems there is no stopping them. The Ashville nine which was seen in a couple of exhibition games on the local diamond, last season, seems to be the only squad possible to halt the Brewers' march to glory

if they can still field the same line-up.

With the loss of ace-hurler, "Diamond" Jim Harvey, who could fire the onion down the chute like nobody's business, the outlook is not so rosy, unless they can produce another mound wizard.

Madeen "Slim" Areulli will toe about it, and until they do that the rubber for the Leonardmen something, the din will continue with brother Obear behind the unmbated platter. Jindoo, the Muscle Man, Dave Leonard and his bustling will be cavorting around first beernen have gone through base, with Tony Peewee" Alves glorious series of friendlies, with and George Sotiza is the keystone three straight wins, and are explanation, whilst Dave Leotard set to make 1941 a year for thear himself will look after the Hot supporters to remember and Craner. FEA-

TO-DAY'S BOWLS PROGRAMME LOOKS PARTICULARLY INTERESTING, BEING TURED BY “NEEDLE” MATCHES IN ALL THREE DIVISIONS.

Big match of the day will be between K.B.G.C. "A". who have made several sweeping changes, and the Champions, Recreio "A". who will have out their usual side. How effective the changes in the home team will be remains to be seen but my personal opin- 15 that Recreio will

win fairly easily, as all their three to them. Win, lose or draw, the Brewery Bombers will be in there fighting.

rinks are seasoned combinations.

Another interesting match would have been Craigengower's fixture against the unbeaten Recreio “B”. but this by mutual arrangement, will now be played to-morrow.

None of the other senior mat- ches to-day are likely to be very close und wins should be scored by Police, K.B.G.C. "B" and I. R. C.

K. Tong Should Win Big match in Second Division will be between the two League leaders, Kowloon Tong and Pri- son Officers. With the advantage of playing at home and with three well-balano rinks which have all been tried and not found want- ing, Kowloon Tong should win, although the result might be

close one.

League Games

By this time next week. all the teams will begin their trek to the grasslands of Chatham Road to commence their pennant cam- paign, and how much they have benefitted from their pre-season "friendlies" will be seen as the season gets under way.

Pre-season training is a serious i affair, especially for pitchers, who have to get their arms into shape for the gruelling task ahead of them, and each team is anxious to get the jump on the others as far as condition is concerned, coupled with the advisibility of winning all the earlier games to tore up a big lead in the race, nd then to work out plans to eep the lead, instead of rolling finlo form towards the end of the

season

Just Hard Work

The only medium to stardom in any sport is hard work, and the best way to get into shape for baseball is to play plenty of base- ball, in order to work the muscles that will be used during the sea- son, and to exercise the eye and timing, which are so necessary to make a team out of an aggrega- tion of individuals.

Take for instance, Ski Powlaw- ski, the Pulverising Polack, who hurled the Mindinão to victory last year. Long before spring was here, he was out at sun- baked Caroline Hill with the Merry Mindinaoang` tossing them around, and although they were handicapped by the loss of several of their players of last season, their "four times a week" work- outs have moulded the team intą serlous pennant contender, for two in a row, championship.
