PROGRESS IN THE SOLLUM REGION
(By Reuter's Special Correspondent with the advanced British forces in the
--Western Desert) ·
Germans
FIGHTING IS NOW in progress in the Attack at
Western Desert on a fluid front of 40 miles along which British troops are holding up a fresh attempted advance into Egypt by four German armoured columns.
The Germans began the attack on Mon- day afternoon from three directions. One column, comprising a number of tanks and motorised infantry, advanced from Capuzzo along the edge of the escarpment, which runs parallel with the sea towards Hellfire Pass.
They were engaged by a British forre less than a quarter of their them at bay which kept throughout the evening and Mon- day night.

Yesterday morning, however, the British, who belong to
one
of the most famous regiments in. In the British Army, had to retire from the Pass In the face of the Germans' great weight. By noon the British troops had consolidated new positions about a mile from the Pass and are now holding the Germans.
Flank Covered
two The Germans threw out armoured columios southward from Capuzzo to cover the right Bank of this main advance simti taneously.
These were opposed by Bri tish mobile forces and through out the night the battle swayed back and forth across miles of open country at the top of the escarpment.
Details of the fighting are not known but yesterday morning the British forces were reported to be holding the Germans south of Sollum.
The fourth column, whose role appears to be to support the other)
due three, is advancing slowly cast from a point on the Libyan' frontier south of Capuzzo,
This column has not yet tried to join battle.
German Aim
The German push does not appear to herald a general effort to penetrate further into Egypt: objective seems to be to secure positions which will protect their right flank and communications Bardia from from Capuzzo and harassing by
