'TIP AND RUN' RAIDER

RUNS TOO LATE

A Dornier 17, which was on its way to this country for a raid was intercepted before it could reach the coast by the pilots of two Hurricane fighters.

The Hurricanes, outward bound the on an offensive patrol, saw German bomber approaching the coust and attacked it from op- posite sides. Then they swept down on it from above, raked the length of the fuselage and then attacked again at point-blank range.

All this time the bomber's rear- gunner returned their fire with more energy than accuracy, while the pilot turned his machine to- wards the land. To aid his escupe bombs in the he jettisoned his

sea.

The German toen tried to glide over the sea to make a safe land- ing ashore. But his damaged ma-

chine failed to stay the course, and with a splash the Dornier glided straight into the water. It disap- peared in exactly ten seconds.

When the fighter pilots return- ed, one of them found that the German rear-gunner had put a bullet through his tailplanę. The other machine was undamaged.
