In Peril With

SESSION

Vichy Holding Key PLANNED

(By Reuter's Military Commentator)

THE FLIGHT OF Rudolf Hess to Britain is undoubtedly an event of first-rate import- ance and will have definitely favourable reactions on Britain's war effort, but what- ever may be the real cause of his flight, it will not have an effect on events which are immediately pending.

Hitler's plans for the coming campaign will not be altered or delayed; on the con- trary, the flight of Hess is quite likely to hasten its execution, for Hitler may well feel the necessity for giving Germany something else to think about and to achieve a fresh triumph to hearten them.

Within a month. as I see

the situation, Hitler will invade Spatt, with or without France's consent besiege Gibraltar and attempt to seize the Atlantic ports of Spain and Portugal.

There will be a threat, perhaps 80 divisions wh ch standing ready, on Rusa

with are

forced and the attack on Egypt pressed while attacks on Turkey and Syria are also under way.

Grave Decision

It will be seen how much these plans centre round Vichy and¦ France to an even greater "estent than they do round Russia,

HITLER BEHIND HESS ESCAPE?

(SPECIAL TO "CHINA MAIL”)

HIGH OFFICIALS IN London are now suspecting that Hitler was the author of Rudolf Hess's flight, but if it was contrived to "soften" Britain by the deceptiveness of a German trick, it has failed.

Mr. Ernest Bevin, Minister of Labour, gave it as his opinion that Hess fled with Hitler's complete knowledge. Mr. Bevin labelled Hess a "murderer" and advocated no negotiations with him on any matters.

Mr. Churchill is still keeping Germany guessing on what Hess has disclosed.

Japanese action in Shansi, Cheklang and elsewhere is regarded in Washington as defensive action designed to huld at bay the Chinese forces which continue to harry Japanese communication lines.
