SITUATION IN IRAQ

RAPIDLY BEING UNDER CONTROL

(By Reuter's Special Correspondent in Cairo)

"THE SITUATION IN IRAQ IS RAPIDLY BEING GOT UNDER CONTROL," STATED A BRITISH OFFICER WHO HAS JUST FLOWN BACK FROM HABBANIYAH IN AN EXCLU- SIVE INTERVIEW WITH REUTER YESTER- DAY MORNING.

The officer continued: "The R.A.F., cooperating with the British Imperial forces, have now put out of action the Iraqian air force without having to use very devastating methods.

"The Iraqian army in isolated sections : howed a spirited ullen- sive sprit but in the main it was unpepared for major engagements and as soon as it was up against it, it surrendered in large bers

"The Iraqians are tough soldiersl but easily influenced, and with the arrival <f reinforcements from Ind u, the position is rapidly eas- ing.'

Nazi 'Planes

The officer confirmed reports of the arrival of a number of Nazi

planes at Syrian airfields.

Provins, in charge of a search- light site, tried to help the pilot to land safely by swinging searchlight beam on trees and on the hilly ground.

But the plane crashed.

Æ

Provins formed a rescue party. Although the plane was burning furiously and bullets were flying, he directed rescue operations with coolness and efficiency.

Roberts, one of the rescue party, assisted in lifting one of the wings of the burning plane and then went in among the flames.

He dragged out a member of the crew who was covered in oil, with his boots, trousers and hair burning.

Roberts gut the man clear of the burning wreckage and ex- tinguished the flames

GOT

HEAVY DAMAGE TO CIVILIAN PROPERTY IN MALTA

There was consider- able damage to civi- lian property and some people were kill- ed in Wednesday night's raid on Malta,

which was carried out by a smaller forma- tion of enemy 'planes than usual.

Bombs were dropped but no Naval or R.A.F. property was damag- ed and there were no Service casualties, states an official com- munique.-Reuter.

THEY SAVE CASH IN BOMBED METERS

Early visitors to bomb-wrecked areas after a blitz are the men who collect money from the gas me ers of deserted houses.

Often the money more gas than has been consumed, has paid for and many inquiries have reached the "Daily Mirror" about what happens to the money.

The Gas Light and Coke Company credits surplus money to the consumer, and it is re- turned when he is traced, If he cannot be found it is held until he applies for it.

In badly-bombed areas the gas company usually opens a tempor- ary office to assist residents in doubt.
