SAPPERS TAKE 5-3 DECISION IN FRIENDLY BASEBALL MATCH Canucks Beaten In Pre-Season, Fixture

BATTING HONOURS FOR TOMMY TOMASHEVSKY

By "Grandstand”

ROYAL ENGINEERS triumphed over the Cana- dians 5-3 in a friendly pre-season baseball tilt at Caroline Hill last Saturday. It was a close game, featured by Engineer hurler Sarsfield's fine debut on the hill. Working for seven frames, Sarsfield whiffed one, passed four and scattered five hits, whilst "Wild Bill" Smith for the losers fanned four, walked six and doled out two safeties.

Canadians lost the toss and went in to bat first. Johnnie Fisher rapped out a stinging two-bagger and burgled the payoff station to chalk up the first counter for the Canucks.

Gas Oliver drew a pass on the gravy train and pilfered second, but the scoring threat was snuffed with a brilliant double killing, when centre-fielder Ratcliffe clamped his hands on Bakar's towering fly. and relayed to second to erase Oliver, who had started for the home-plate with the crack of the bat.

The boys m khaki went into Johnnie F.sher, who guarded the the lead as Shaw, Foley and Fox windy alley for the Canadians, dented the station in their half of plastered Sarsfield for the other the chapter, on a measly single extra-base clout with a double. and two walks assisted by three · miscues, With two gone in the Forumers Win ‘Annual' second semester, keystoner Wally "Surge" Welford booted Vietor Lim's easy grounder for another Canadian marker to trickle over the plate.

Two Free Passes

In the third s'anza, after Foley grounded und Fux had popped out. Wild BI conceded two successive passes to put ducks in the pond, both runners eventually scoring on 'Cyclone' Bakar's ex- pens ve bobble of Rateliffe's roller, Alter Tomashevsky had poled out a triple in the fourth, the Ola ermen erossed up a run-and- hit set-up as Bill Pullen and Blas popped out weakly. For the re- mainder of the game both sides dished out air-tight fielding, with The Canadians pushing over one more tally on two successive hits in the sixth.

Camuck keystoner Tommy Tomashevsky was the big gun of the day, clouting two of his team's five blows, one of which was good for a three-bagger, the longest blow of the fray, whilst right gar dener Cork ripped one through the infeld for the Sappers in his only trip to the plate.
