OF THE FOUR-ACES SYSTEM
TORCHES AND cigarette lighters flickering in a mysteriously blacked-out court, one prisoner moaning in a faint in the dock, another, his son, yelling abuse at the chief of the Flying Squad through the darkness and crying "Black Justice," a woman's screams these were the ingredients of one of the most astonishing scenes ever enacted at the Old Bailey recently.
It followed the jury's verdict of Guilty against Nathan Fishberg and his son, Harry Charles Fish- berg, Whitechapel jewellers, charged with receiving stolen jewellery worth £1,100. According to the police, the Fishbergs' premises in Black Lion Yard. off Whitechapel Road, E., had been a "dump for stolen goods" for years.
Beside them in the dock WIE William Bruce. 29-year-old
11 bricklayer, who was found guilty of stealing two sulteases con- laining the jewellery.
Bruce has been nicknamed "The Yank" by members of the Flying Squnek. One of the wit Hesse, was called a "mark" counsel.
