R. A.F.'S SUCCESS
IN DESERT
Further detalls of the expuri- ences of the small force of pick-
ec British and New Zealand troops which had been harrassing Italian outposts among the sand dunes of the Libyan desert lying south of the Coastal area. in which the Australians and a Bri-
tish armoured division were operating. indicate that their activities included the pirating of Italian transport convoys. the shelling and capturing of isolat- ed forts, the blowing up of am- munition dumps, and the burning of aircraft on the ground, says a correspondent
"Sydney of the Morning Herald.”
This rand dune country stretches for 800 miles from east width la west, with an average of 150 miles Individual patrols, equipped with fighting ears, were in the desert for as long as six weeks, carrying food and water needed to last a good part of that time.
The Southern Desert is the largest sandt dune Held in the ! world. and is entirely different from the flat, stony desert over which the AIF. marched. No rain fal's for decades, and rows of and dunes 100 to 400 feet) high 2 from horizon to horizon. ; The Italians felt that the garrisons of Kufra and at other isolated bases were secure from attack be- rause they were protected by the dunes, iminense distances. lack of water, and barely endurable heat.
In the
their early days of patrol, one or two of the drivers became confused by the yellow g'are, fell over the brink huge dunes, and rolled over and over for 100 feet without being harmed. For three days it was Бо hot that some of the men became delirious.
of
One patrol, returning from a mine-laying expedition along the coastal end of the Kufra road, appeared suddenly before a fort in the Augila oasis. Three shells I drove out the astonished garrison. The raiders removed the fort's entire armament and disappeared into the desert as swiftly as they had come, As a result of such ards, all normal traffic along de- sert routes has stopped, and no movement is allowed except in convoys, escorted by guns and arcraft. Twice patrols were bumbed in the shelterless desert. but were not dam.ged.

and They invested fombarded the fort, using a mor- tar, captured 30 Italians, and marched on the town of Traghem. whose inhabitants marched out to surrender, beating drums and with flags flying. Two more oases were attacked before the force turned southwards towards French territory.
PILOT V.C., BOMBED BRIDGE, IS KILLED
Flying Officer Donald E. Gar- land, one of the two officers whose gallantry in destroying a bridge over the Albert Canal in Belgium was recognised by the award of the V.C., is now reported as pre- sumed killed in action. He was previously reported missing.
The award, which was the second V. C. of the war, was made In June.
Flying Officer Garland led the formation, all the crews of which had volunteered to attack the bridge, and much of the success of the operation was attributed to him and to his navigator, Ser- geant T. Gray, upon whom the the V. C. was conferred at the same time,
CAN OPERATE IN THE STREET
An old London bus has been taken over and converted for use. as a mobile hospital at Hove, Sus- sex, where day; and night it is standing by ready for raids.
Dr. N. E. Chadwick, the Medical, Officer of Hove, told a reporter:-- "The ex-bus le so well equip. ped that we can set up an oper- ating theatre in the street to deal with emergency cases, be- fore they are taken by ambu- lance to hospital,
"We can deal with everything but a major operation, The doc- tors and nurses are all wartime
· volunteers."
