"The submarine was left help- less on the surface, with clouds of smoke and fumes pouring from her.
The ship was the Sarastone, of Llandelly, in command of Captain John Herbert. She was in an At- lantic convoy when boiler trouble reduced her speed to two knots.
The convoy went on, Captain Herbert decided to make for Lis- bun.
Two days latter the Sarastone's men saw the U-boat surfacing three miles away.
Smashed Heavy Gun Captain Herbert held the fire of his twelve-pounder gun,
The Sarastone was going so slowly that the U-boat appar- ent thought she was stopped. and approached from astern, When the Germans were two
miles off they opened fire with a light gun and missed.
The Sarastone's twelve-pounder replied, but the shell fell short.
The British seamen saw the Germans bring the U-boat's heavy gun to bear on their ship.
At that moment the Saras- tone's gunner fired 8 second time. This shell burst under the submarine's heavy gun and put It out of action,
