What the Nazis think of the Air Force of their Axis partners is reflected in the following extracts from a recent article in the "Volkischer Beobachter".

"The airmen of the Royal Air Force whose mission it is to bomb the aerodromes from which the Italian Air Force undertakes its raids on the Greek front, are not to be envied. Even if they light up the whole sky with flares, dur- ing their night flights, there will be nothing to see except a seem- with ingly endless plain covered olive and fig groves, among which Isolated buildings rise. It is dif- ficult to make out whether these are farmhouses or hangars.

We have travelled about 150 km. in order to visit an aerodrome, It is the model aerodrome of the Italian Air Force, to the plan of which practically all other new aerodromes are constructed. These Italian air bases look different from the German, as the type of country in which they are situated is different; the only thing they have in common is the effort made to conceal them from the obser- vation of strangers. This was so successful in the case of the aero- drome we visited that we did not recognise it, although we had been driving towards it across the plain for some time, unill we stopped immediately in front of Its gates.

It is a very unlikely chance that one of these aerodromes will be hit. All those we have seen have frequent alarms, but have never been hit by the enemy. And even if they were hit, only a fraction of their personnel, material and supplies are ever actually on the aerodrome. A carefully thought out system, about which it is im- possible, for obvious reasons, to give further details, has spread men and material over the coun- tryside in such a way that it is impossible for the enemy to find them.

The Italian aircraft industry is perhaps one of the best developed branches of industry in the coun- try: In the Savola 70 the Italians had already produced ✡ three- at the engined bomber which, time, was regarded as extremely fast, and which is still employea with success to-day: The three- engined aircraft is well-liked by the Italian airmen. Nevertheless, following the experience gained in recent years, it was decided also to construct in series a number of twin-engined bomber types, which can almost compete with fighters as regards speed. And it will al- ways go down to the honour of the Italian Air Force that, during the critical period of the Abys- sinian war, there were found among Its ranks, 500 valiant men who were ready to hurl - their. machines and their bombs at the British warships. But these were not dive-bombers in the present- day meaning of the word.
