MAINTAINS PROMISE
Creates Favourable Impression Against Tsui Wai-Pui Interesting Match
On
Stand Court
✅By “Adrøm”
KH IP, the South China champion of the dast two seasons, seen for the first time by a sur- prisingly large crowd on Stand Court of Hong Kong Cricket Club yesterday, gave an excellent display against former champion, Tsui Wai-pui in the Co- lony singles championship, although he lost in straight sets.
"Tsui won 6-4, 6—4.
It is probable that Tsui Wai-pui, having taken the measure of his apponent in the first three games, did not take matters thereafter as seriously as he might have done, but nevertheless there were num- erous occasions when Ip executed well - planned coups with the finesse of a veteran.
GOLF STARTING TIMES
There were several glaring shortcomings in his game and at the outset he was obviously ner- vous, while at crucial moments he was apt to make foolish errors, but these lapses can be atributed to lack of experience which time should do much to eradicate.
Fine Forehand
Ip's forehand drive was his most profitable stroke yesterday. Hit cross-court into his opponent's forehand corner, it was a difficult shot to return and at no time was Tsui able to deal with it with his usual confidence. His sliced drive down the sideline was also a good Following are Royal Hong Kong Got Shot, the ball running away after and keeping hitting the ground very low.
On the backhand he showed a definite weakness and was quite unable to attack on this wing.

Ip, on the occasions that he took the forecourt, volleyed crisply and overhead he accurately, while really hit the ball when he could reach it comfortably.
It was
noticeable, however, that when hurried, Ip was often at a loss. His lobbing was not very accurate and his backhand Insufficiently powerful to per. mit a passing shot.
Nevertheless he never gave up trying and his plucky attempts to return some of Tsui's best of-

of the crowd.
Definitely maintaining the promise of his earlier match against Ho Ka-lau, Ip is with out doubt the most promising newcomer to the tournament for many seasons--this year is the first time he has appeared. Tsui's game is very much the same as it was last year. He made his usual quota of inexplicable errors and, when he so desired, the inevitable winner.
