CHAMPION HIT AND HURT FOR 13 GOOD ROUNDS

RELENTLESSLY PUNISHING his big, youthful foe with murderous' blows, Joe Louis, world heavy- weight champion recently successfully defended his title for the 15th time by scoring a technical knock- out over Abe-Simon of New York in the 13th round of a title bout set for 20 rounds at the Olympia Sta- dium, cables Jack Cuddy from Detroit.

Battered and bleeding after providing the champion with the most serious opposition since the Brown Bomber was knocked out by Max-Schmeling in 1936, Abe Simon was saved from complete slaugh- ter by Referee Sam Hennessey, who halted the bout.

Simon, heavily punished, was well and came back for sent crashing to the canvas twice mixing it constantly with Louis. in the fatal 13th round before the United Press. referee halted the fight, The big New York youth was gume, but he was

Mike Jacobs, outstanding box- ing promoter, immediately after the fight announced that Louis and Simon would clash in a return bout in New York's Madison Square Garden on May 16. The return fight would be set for ff- teen rounds, he said.

Nineteen thousand spectators, a record indoor crowd for Detroit, were flabbergasted as the young New York Hebrew held his own with Louis for a good part of the fight.

The spectators came to see an- other speedy "execution" by Louis, but stayed to see a young boxer, who only recently climbed into

the first ten top heavyweights, hit and hurt Louis and not for a few rounds but for 13 frames.

Known as "Man-Mountain" be... cause of his size, Simon showed no fear and he waded into his heavy-hitting opponent from the

start.

But Louis-was-too:crafty and fast for his powerful foe. Twice before the “unlucky" 13th, Simon ran into deadly blows and Sprawied оп the canvas for counts. At one time he nearly landed in the press row as Louis hit him a terrific blow and ho went half-way through the ropes.

But despite the sledge-hammer blows which he took, Simon wea- thered the punishment remarkably
