HEROISM BY YOUNG MAN WINS MEDAL FOR HIS BRIDE'S WEDDING PRESENT

A YOUNG MAN who jestingly promised his sweetheart a medal for her wedding present, won one for heroism în an air raid.

The award is embarrassing William Albert Dunn, twenty-eight, of Bebington, Cheshire, so much that he refuses to leave the house.

His fiancee, Miss Freda Wright, is receiving the congratulations of friends for him.

Mr. Dunn is a voluntary dispatch rider for the Cheshire Constabulary. The medal of the Civil Division of the O.B.E. was awarded to him for gal- lantry in rescuing Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Brooks, of Port Sunlight, and their daughter, Betty, ten, when trapped in the wreckage of their home.

During a blitz Mr. Dunn was out! "He seemed to possess the on duty when an H. E. demolished strength of ten." several houses.

A pollerman and civilian tried to rescue the family, but were overcome by coal gas from a burst main

a present for my bride after all."

Mrs. Brooks was buried under an upturned table and a six-foot

square slab of concrete.

With the help of a civilian, Mr. Dunn levered the concrete up and sawed through the table.

He saved Betty, first by cutting off her hair, which was pinned under a large clock, and then by crawling with her through the

tunnels. She was suffering from
