OPENING PHASE OF 1941 BATTLE OF BRITAIN
Now Being Waged In And Over The Atlantic
Intensified War Against Shipping
(By Reuter's Naval Correspondent)
THE OPENING PHASES OF THE BATTLE FOR BRITAIN IN 1941 ARE BEING FOUGHT FAR OUT FROM SIGHT OF LAND IN AND ABOVE THE TROUBLED WATERS OF THE ATLANTIC OCEAN.
MINOR SKIRMISHES
ON THAI BORDER
Minor
skirmishes on the Indo-Chino border during the week-end are report- ed in a Thailand High Command communi- que, which alleges that the French fired on a Thai party in the northern sector, and that a French patrol violating the neutral zone in the south was repulsed.— Reuter,
It is a relentless, ceaseless and silent war- fare, of which little will be heard save the oc- casional trickle of news of some heroic ex- ploit.
But the progress of the battle will be marked in the periodic figures of British and Allied shipping losses and in the tally of dam- age inflicted on enemy raiders both at sea and in the air.
With the improvement in the 2,000 miles of European coastline, weather as the Spring “campaign= | presented a new problem which ing season opens." it is becoming| the British Navy and Air Force clear that the unmediate German; are tackling with greater deter- strategy in the West is to endeav-mination, our to implement the threat made

The number of submarines the Germans will use is reliably es- timated at between 100 and 159. but not all could be ut sea simultaneously.
No single factor which can help defeat the enemy plans is being neglected.
The best scientific brains are working on, improved means of U-boat detection, protection against aircraft and so forth, while the question of providing more convoy vessels is receiving constant unremitting attention. Reuter.
