TREMENDOUS NAVAL EXPANSION OF THE

GREAT POWERS

STRIKING EVIDENCE of the ever-growing naval expansion of the great powers, particularly the United States, and of the destruction of a major part of Mussolini's battle fleet, is contained in the 1940 edition of "Jane's Fighting Ships," published in London yesterday, and which estimates that 40 capital ships are under construction or on order in the world to-day.

Despite wartime censorship and secrecy the volume contains new plans of the world's most powerful battleship, "King George V," in which Lord Halifax went to America, of the new Nazi battle- ships "Bismarck" and "Tirpitz" and details about other powerful units which America, Japan and Italy are adding to their fleets.

A war los8 section is included for the Arst time since 1919. and gives details of casualties in the belligerent navies, prefaced by aerial photographs of the destruc- tion wrought among the Italian feet at Taranto by the Air Arm last November.

Britain's losses in big ships have been comparatively light. the highest price being paid by small vessels, over 100 of them being lost, some without trace.

Britain also lost 36 destroyers and 23 submarinca up to time the lists were complied. Germany's fleet was reduced by one pocket battleship, the "Graf Spee," four cruisers and 13 des- troyers, while it is thought that few of the 70 U-boats with which she began the war still remain in service.

EXCLUDING THE DAMAGE AT TARANTO, ITALY LOST A CRUISER, SEVEN DESTROYERS AND AT LEAST 30 SUBMA- RINES.

New Battleships

Of the world's new capital strips the under construction, all with exception of four Japanese pocket battleships, are of at least 35.000 tons, while 20, if not more, are 40,000 tons or over, the latter in- cluding four British of the "Lion" class. the Arst two of which are due to be completed in 1943.

The United States has 17 bat- tleships building or on order. and it is suggested that some of there may have the huge dis- placement of 52,000 tons. Other items in the American building programme include 12 aircraft-carriers, 54 cruisers, 200 destroyers and 80 submarines.

Germany's U-Boats

how It is impossible to guess many submarines Germany has laid down since there is no sold basis for the American estimate of 300, but it is believed this figure is by no means unreasonable.
