J. F. HOUGH was celebrated in racing circles as the strongest rider ever seen in the Colony. He was a man of large frame, but so keen was his interest in the sport that he voluntarily went on diet, reducing his weight by a stone and a half in order to ride in the races! His career as a jockey was unfortunately brought to an end in the races of 1894 when he broke his leg while rld- ing a pony which bore the name of Vagrant. His injury was so severe that "J. F." as he Was familiarly known, nevér ogain took part in public races.
F
Many other great gentlemen riders of the past might be noted. There were among others: G. C. C. Masters, who rode for many years, and like "Wild Harry" Hitchings rode with his stirrups short. So great was his success that in 1908 he won nine races for Mr. (afterwards.Sir Hormus- jee) Mody, "riding animals that any other man would have been proud to get a third place on."
His contemporary, Morton Jones, an Australian, was also hard rider. He, too, had many stt, cesses on the turf, and was noted for his peculiarity of kicking his feet free from his stirrups · In order to use his spurs to better advantage.
