A special Hong Kong cash sweep on the Derby was inaugurated some 25 years ago, when tickets were sold at $10 each. In 1922 the sale of tickets just topped the 2,000 mark, and in 1,832 tickets were sold.

It will be interesting to note that the special sweeps on the big race were not run by Hong Kong Joe- key Club but were originally conducted by the Chinese Club and. later on, South China Ath- letic Association also tan a sweep of their WIL

In 1935. however, Jockey Club Introduced the special $1 sweep on the Hong Kong Derby. The scheme, ав may

BUDGET SLASHED

Hong Kong's Budget estimates for the year beginning April 1st, 1941, has been slashed by near- ly two million dollars as

the result of re-examina- tion by the Select Com. mittee of Legislatíve Council,

Although no precise details of the cuts are likely to be made avail→ able until Thursday's Budget de- bate, they affect principally, the Harbour Department and works provided under the heading of Public Works Extraordinary.

This much is disclosed by Government's publication this morning of the draft Ordinance to apply a sum not exceeding $52,483,294 to the public service of the Colony in 1941-42, which represents a reduction of about $1,750,000 on the Estimates as originally drafted.

re-

Charitable services have ceived an additional $10,000 as a result of the review by the Select Committee and an addi- tional $100,000 appears under the- head of Miscellaneous Service.

Harbour Department, however, has suffered a cut of $600,000, the Medical Depart- ment of just over $100,000 and Public Works Extraordinary, a cut of $1,150,000.
