DAISY, THE
WHITE SWEEP
Daisy Elliott has just completed forty years as chimney sweep of Shamley Green Surrey.
He is the neatest sweep for miles around, and never soils the white "dickie" which he always wears.
Though everyone calls him Daisy, nobody knows why.
His real name is Albert and he is in his seventy-first year. Ile wife always calls him Bert.
It is her pride husband's reputation
to keep up her as a "white sweep," and she washes his white "dickies" to perfection.
Daisy remembers the days when sweeps were very black, so black that they never bothered to wash.
"The blackest sweep I ever saw," he says, "was called John Thomas, "He used to climb inside the chimneys, so it wasn't any use for; him to wash."
On Sundays Daisy functions in his back garden as the village bar- ber, specialising in a nice hair- eut for twopence or threepence ac- cording to the size of the job.
Only once i forty years has any rival chimney-sweep tried to set up shop in Shanley Green,
He lasted three days.
