A RECENT ARTICLE mentioned the formation of a new political party in Holland, the “Netherlands Union." Several prominent politicians have signi- fied their willingness to forget their differences of opinion and to cooperate under the leadership of Holland's well known ex-Prime Minister, Dr. Colijn, in order to work together for the common good.
The draft declaration of the party pledged the members' loyalty to the House of Orange and the fixed determination to strive for freedom and in-
THAILAND
SITUATION
SERIOUS
As an indication of the seriousness of the situa- tion between Thailand and Indo-China, it was
dependence, but the Germans forbade this, where- announced to-day that upon Dr. Colijn and some other personalities with-martial law had been en- drew from the party.
Others, however, continued their
efforts to launch the new party, willy-nilly, obeying the German the oppressors, as they were of opinion that some sort of cooper- ation with the Germans was ne-
cessary in order to keep things moving.
Many
Hollanders criticised
this attitude, but further newв from Holland indicates that the Netherlands Union is not a tool of the Nazis, but that the party is determined to follow its own well-defined programme.
A "Dutch" Nazi paper published an interview which one of its re- porters had with the secretary of The Netherlands Union,
at
One of the first questions asked
this interview concerned the standpoint the Union intended The to take towards the Jews. Union leader replied that religious matters did not interest the party. which only distinguished between loval patriots and traitors.
Former Minister Welcomed
When the Nazi reporter asked which government was acknow~ ledged by the Union, the reply came that the Netherlands gov- ernment in London was the only government acknowledged, and to his astonishment he was informed that the ministers who had fled from the country would re-occupy their positions after the war as a matter of course.
"But what if Germany wing the war?" "God forbid," was the reply, "there is not a single Netherlander who hopes that will happen, for the conse- quences would be too horrible to think of." It is evident that а political party which has the courage take such a stand, is not lacking in loyalty.
to
The Germans, however, aro flabbergasted and their preas has started a bitter campaign against "those Incorrigible Dutchmen."
To Hollanders the world over it tho will be clear that although new party has been.compelled to strike the words "loyalty to the Queen and a desire for freedom and independence" from its mani- fest, these words are deeply en- graved in the hearts of its mem- bers, who moreover do not hesl- tate to demonstrate their feelings.
