A Toddler

Mothers often put this question to me: "As Tommy is now thir- teen months old, and as he is a big, hefty baby, should he not be en- couraged to walk?"

Well, that's a difficult

question

to answer, because there me so many possibilities.

I am always trying to preach the gospel of "Don't worry," especially to the younger mothers among my readers.

Think for a moment. How can you compare Mary A., who was a premature baby, difficult to feed,

rather timid and fretty, with Willie B, who comes of a robust stock and who has never given his mother a single day's anxiety?

It just can't be done. To every child there is an index, and this is arrived at af er taking into account matters of sex, build, age, tempera- ment, and reaction to ordinary conditions of life.

With regard particularly to the movement of the baby, it is known that on the average the infant be- gins to crawl at about eight months.

But because a baby crawls until he or she is, say, fourteen months, there is no indication that any- thing is wrong.

Some babies do not crawl at all. and take to their feet in the early part of their second year, after a few preliminary trials,

Others, again, go on crawling and will not respond to the par-

else a book that has been Tent to 71/2

A

No. The book or other ob- jeet has been lent to you by the owner because he has formed good opinion of your sense of res- ponibility. It is a denial of that sense of responsibility to lend it again to another. If you are anx-

book ious to lend the

or other jobject to a friend the owner's per- mission should first be sought. Remember it is not yours to dis pose of in any way.

Q.

When I have been invited! out to tea or to some other meat at a private house am I justified in bringing with me someone who tishes to meet my host or hos- tess?

A. No. The invitation has been extended only to those per- sons specifically named. It is an infringement of hospitality to bring a stranger with you. Even to bring a mutual friend, your children or some relative unless they have been specially mention- ed, is incorrect when visiting on an invitation.

Should there be some person or persons however who wish to meet your host and hostess social- ly for the first time on this occas sion you should either communi- cate with your hostess in time and ask her permission to bring the additional person or persons or else pay a formal call with the strangers un another occasión.

Q. How long should one stay when paying a social visit in the afternoon?

A. A delicate sense of time is a very important social asset. As someone has said a good rule to go by is to aim at being regretted for going rather than to be re- gretted for staying. To out-stay one's welcome is to run the risk of being called a bore. There are ental encouragement to risk walk-some people who can never tear ing to a table three yards off to themselves away from wherever get a reward of much-appreciated they find themselves and stay on chocolate.
