BRIDGE NOTES
THE RIGHT CARD
By The Four Aces
To-day's hand would never see the light of day if North hadn't overbid his hand and if South hadn't misplayed his, but the two mistakes gave East a chance to make a very fine defensive play:

deuce of OFF THE RECORD
West shifted to the spades, and. South was obliged to finesse since putting up the Aco would yield only eignt tricks. The finesse of the spade Queen lost to East's spade King, and East thought carefully before making his text play. Three tricks were needed to defeat the contract, and they had to be taken at once since, otherwise South would obviously. take three hearts, a spade and five clubs.
The only card which could prò. duce three tricks in a hurry was the diamond Queen. The lead of that card assured the defeat of the contract; but note that If East had led a low diamond; West would have been obliged to take the lead and could win only one. other diamond trick before allow- ing South to take the rest.
