HEAVY DAMAGE IN CENTRAL LONDON
CENTRAL LONDON had a heavy air raid in the early hours, when bombs dropped at random on non-military objectives struck such widely differing buildings as a Wren church famous in nursery rhyme and a well-known cinema.
A bomb which hit the railings of the church destroyed many priceless stained-glass windows, most of them more than two and a half centuries old.
The famous bells have not been damaged; but much of the fabric of the building suffered badly. The damage would have been much less but for an unlucky chance.
Instead of burying itself in the earth
the churchyard and throwing its blast upwards, the bomb, a 100-pounder, struck the top of an iron gate set in the hravy railings surrounding the church. It exploded virtually in mut-air, and did extensive dam- age to the north face of the build-

Disconsolate Caretaker
The blast was so great that a column of old ivy, toughly em- bedded in the wall of the church, was blown in a roll along the frent of the building.
The church caretaker. who guards the building nightly. was disconsolate. He had taken great precautions to protect the stained- glass windows, which were his special pride, and was upset to see his handiwork lying shattered around him.
"I was in the vaults when the bomb came down," he said. "The explosion shook the old church and I came up to see what had happened.
"Stained glass windows, al- ready protected by quarter-inch plate glass, were strewn on the floor. The bomb had hit a dou
ble-bolted gate which hasn't
been opened for усага and splinters flew all over the place, "If it had hit the earth It wouldn't have done nearly 50 much damage. The vaults below

The court buildings had been peppered with bomb splinters. white wounds nicked out of the blackened stones looked as if a massive hand had thrown salt! against the building.
A.F.S. Heroes
The licensee of a public-house in an area affected by fire earned the praise and thanks of A.F.S. men who helped to fight a fierce blaze. Although warned to evacuate his premises because of the increasing danger, he refused to go, and continued to provide refreshments throughout the night for the firemen and wardens.
If they could risk their skins: fighting fires, then so could 1," the landlord said. "It was just a job of work that had to be done The Bremen were grateful for the hot drinks and sandwiches, and I was glad to be able to help.”
Other Central London buildings damaged included the Associated Press of America building, a po- pular restaurant, in which diners were flung from their seats by a bomb explosion, Many were in- jured and taken to hospital. The band continued to play, "There'll always be an England," as the restaurant rocked with the shock.

TOO CLEVER A.R.P.
A London business man who values his sleep has lately de- clined to fol- low his wife and fami- ly to the safety and discomfort of their air-raid shelter. He has made his bed nightly under the dining-room table. With the sideboard on one side and the wall on the other, he con- sidered he had good enough protection against the collapse of his house.
